How-To: Get the Longest Wear Out of Your Lipstick

Hello Beautifuls! First off, I want to apologize for being MIA for a minute there. Now, without further ado…

I think you all can agree that the worst thing about your favorite bold lip color is that it doesn’t last very long, smears everywhere when you eat or drink and if you’re really unlucky it gets on your teeth 😳. So here is my guide to getting the longest wear out of your lipstick:

– Make sure you prep your lips!
1) Exfoliate! I love the Fresh ‘Sugar Lip Polish’ $22.50, 0.6 oz. This stuff gives a good scrubbing while softening and hydrating at the same time. If you don’t like the price tag, try making a DIY lip scrub at home. There are a bunch of recipes found online, mainly consisting of brown sugar. Here’s an article from Brit + Co with 23 different DIY lip scrub recipes!

2) Hydrate! After using a lip scrub, on dry clean lips, I apply my Fresh ‘Sugar Lip Serum Advanced Therapy‘ $35, 0.3 oz. This is supposed to fill in all the lines, plump, soften and hydrate your lips. I don’t think I’ve used it long enough or enough times to really know how much of a difference it makes in comparison to other hydrating lip products. But it does always feel good going on. If you want something inexpensive that you can buy at a drugstore, pick up a ‘Hydration Lock’ ChapStick with sodium hyaluronate.

3) Prime! There are many different lip primers out there. Right now my go to is Bite Beauty ‘Line & Define Lip Primer’. I also liked the Too Faced Lip Insurance Lip Primer. The Bite one is more hydrating while the Too Faced one is kinda drying. But, I felt that the Too Faced one made my lip color last longer then the Bite one did. I think I’m still on the search for my HG lip primer.

Now, once your lips are prepped you’re ready for the color!

Tips:
– Opt for matte lipstick. It tends to last longer on its own versus the rest since it is naturally drier.
– Choose lip colors that are labeled ‘long wearing’, like Kat Von D’s ‘Everlasting Liquid Lipstick‘. ( that stuff is amaze-balls and wears like cement … or something lol)
– If you are not using a primer (which typically acts like a lip liner), use a lip liner to prevent feathering and fill in any lines. Go for a color that complements or opt for an ‘invisible’ liner (I know Sephora carries a few different kinds, including one from their own brand).

If you think that’s not enough or you really want some extra staying power…

4) Set! Use a tissue to gently blot your lips to remove any excess oils. Then, apply a thin layer of translucent setting powder. Depending on the look of it after adding the setting powder, you can choose to add another thin layer of lipstick on top to bolden the color again. If your lips are too dry for the powder or don’t want to risk the possible peeling, use a setting spray instead! Try the one by Model in a Bottle. Use a small compact brush, like a concealer brush, spray the setting spray onto the brush and then very gently and lightly tap the product onto your lips to set. Honestly, I’m not sure if that product is even okay for use on your lips but I have not had a problem so far. It is an excellent setting spray for special events or those days you really need your makeup to stick. The ‘Model in a Bottle’ company also makes a lipstick sealer, which I have yet to try. If you have, please comment below and let me know what you think. Lastly, you can give the Ciate London ‘Kiss Play Stay’ a whirl. It seems that it does a pretty good job, but it really depends on the lipstick finish and formulation you use it with. It is meant for your lips, but kinda burns sometimes, which is ‘eh’ probably not the most desired feeling.

So that is my step by step guide to long lasting lips! Just keep in mind, I don’t think there is any lipstick in existence that will not budge at all after eating a five course meal and drinking, so plan accordingly. But, this guide may help.
